The vagina is self cleaning and does require anything. However, vulva which is the external part of the genital needs to be cleaned with warm water. It is essential to clean the clitoris, clitoral hood and inner and other labia. It is also advisable to clean the anus and the area between the anus and the vagina. One must always wipe from front to back.

Both penis and vulva owners can use a mild, unscented and colorless soap if they prefer as fragrance soap can cause irritation. However, using soap is not essential.
