What is coming out?

Coming out refers to the process where an individual identify and accept their gender identity and sexual orientation, and decide to share that information with a group of people. Coming out is not a one time thing or a single event. It is a process that involves you being comfortable and safe with yourself as well as the person you are sharing this information with. It can be grand announcement or a personal conversation with someone. Coming out is based on the situation, who you are coming out to and their understanding of the situation. Gender identity and sexual orientation can also change in a persons lifetime and hence coming out is a continual process.
